What does the Putnam County Commission do?

The Putnam County Commission is the primary legislative and budgeting body for our county. There are 24 commissioners total - two elected from each of our 12 districts. Commissioners vote on major decisions that shape our daily lives: funding for our Sheriff's Department, EMS, schools, roads, public health, emergency services, county buildings, and more.

They also approve budgets, adopt resolutions, set county policies, authorize major purchases, and make decisions impacting taxes and long-term planning.

Where does the County Commission meet?

The Commission meets in the historic Old Courthouse on the Cookeville town square, inside the 3rd-floor main chamber. Meetings are open to the public, and residents should be encouraged to attend, listen, ask questions, and participate in the democratic process.

Why is the County Commission important?

County Commissioners are the closest link between the public and county government. They represent the needs, concerns, and priorities of their district - from neighborhood infrastructure to school resources to community safety. A strong County Commission ensures accountability, transparency, and that the community's voice is truly heard.

Roots & Family

Raised in East Tennessee in a conservative, churchgoing family, Laney learned early what it meant to pitch in, listen, and care for the people around him. Today he’s a father in Cookeville, rooted in the same values of faith, family, and service.

Career & Skills

Laney is a Tennessee Tech alum who studied civil engineering before pivoting to software after losing a civil engineering internship during COVID. That setback pushed him to build resilient, practical skills; now he’s a software engineer creating tools that help small businesses run smoothly.

Why I’m Running

District 3 deserves a commissioner who listens, collaborates, and brings fresh energy. Laney is running to serve the community he calls home—improving schools, making county government transparent and honest, and helping the next generation step up and lead.

Why I’m a Democrat

Laney was raised in a conservative, churchgoing household. As he learned more history and saw how politics affected real people, his views shifted alongside much of his family.

He now identifies with liberal values that look out for working families and people who are struggling. One of his close friends is a Trump supporter; they disagree often but keep talking because dignity and respect matter more than partisanship.

A Bipartisan Pledge

This campaign rejects cable news drama and party point-scoring. I'm here for respectful discourse and practical wins for District 3.

What I'm not here for

  • Partisan point-scoring
  • Cable news talking points
  • Cable-news drama and national political theater
  • Protecting the status quo

What I am here to do

  • Equip principals and teachers with the resources they need
  • Advocate for TTU and Cookeville Regional at county and state levels
  • Help DCS and kids in foster care
  • Challenge stale systems when they fail our community
  • Show up for marginalized neighbors so every voice is heard
  • Improve how we talk and listen across differences

This campaign is about practical solutions and respectful discourse—not party theatrics.
